AFRICANA
June 16, 2008 04:14 PM PDT
The influence of African rhythm, dance and spirit painted our musical universe in the past century. Rhythm, Blues, Soul, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Dub, Calypso, Samba, Rumba, Jungle, and many more musical genres as we know them today, came directly from Africa and its people. Displaced from their homes and tradition, the descendants of the African people spread around the world carrying with them their Ju-Ju and their rhythms.

Music today would be totally different without soul, rhythm & energy of the 60’s and 70’s pioneers of FUNK. We all know and worship the late great James Brown who promoted this sound into stratosphere, but often forget that behind him there was (and still remains) an entire army of the delegates of funk.

New York Funk part.3 As we have seen and heard in our previous two mixes, musical production and sound shifted from the late 70’s into mid 80’s, when rhythm machines like the legendary TR-808 and synthesizers such as Korg M1 occupied recording studios and dance floors. Funky guitars and vocoders were added, and Electro-Funk was born. About the same time computers were introduced, and from that point nothing in music will ever be the same. Artists who have been playing for some time gained full respect in this era, to name just a few: Roger Troutman and his Zapp Band, Dazz Band, D-Train, One Way, Midnight star, etc. Legends like Herbie Hancock embraced the groove launching killer tracks like “Rockit”, Dr. Funkenstein George Clinton gave us his “Atomic Dog”, Hip Hop star Africa Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force launched planetary electro-hip hop hit “Planet Rock”, and Mr.Roger Nelson aka Prince reached international fame with the album Controversy. On the other hand fresh new musicians and bands emerged, such as: Hashim, Newcleus, the Jonzun Crew, etc. Major record labels in New York were West End, Prelude, Sugarhill, Emergency, Profile, Tommy Boy, Streetwise, etc. For this session, we will stay in deep NYC, where this sound was created and worshipped until today, and will try to concentrate on some GREAT but underrated FUNK tunes and grooves from my record collection. We start with One Ways floor killer Mr. Groove, and finish with Serious Intention and one of the tracks which marked the beginning of a new era – Garage sound of New York. As a bonus track I could not resist to play one track from my favorite band which marked this era - D-Train and their message to all of you out there - K e e p O n ! N-Joy 1. Mr. Groove – One Way
